Group Swimming Lessons

Group swim lessons are for swimmers of all skills levels that are 18 years of age or older, or are enrolled as an IU Student.

Sessions consist of four to six participants per instructor and cost:
Student: $43
Faculty/Staff: $49

Public: $52
Note: If less than four participants, session will be cancelled and full refund issued. No other refunds issued unless you have a doctor's note.

Register at the SRSC or WIC Member Services suite during open facility hours.

Free two-hour parking for weeknight lessons is available at the SRSC with our lesson parking pass given the first night of lessons.

Group Swim Lessons Level Descriptions:
Level 1 – Aquatic Foundations
Designed for participants who have very little or no swimming experience and may be fearful or uncomfortable in the water of any depth. Learn to gain confidence, self-reliance, and feel comfortable in the water while learning the foundational skills of safely being in water.

Class Components:

  • Learn safe water entry and exit
  • Learn to submerge, exhale, and open eyes underwater
  • Learn basic breath control
  • Learn to float on front and back
  • Learn to roll from front to back and back to front
  • Learn to recover from horizontal to vertical position
  • Learn to flutter kick
  • Learn basic personal safety skills
  • Use swim training equipment


Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Designed for participants that feel comfortable in the water and are able to float independently on their backs and on their fronts with their face in the water. This level will continue to focus on being comfortable in the water while developing stroke movement and breathing techniques.

Prerequisites:

  • Comfortable submerge head under water
  • Float for 20 seconds on front and back without assistance
  • Push off from glide with a streamline position
  • Kick 25 yards of flutter kick

Class Components:

  • Learn rotary breathing
  • Practice and improve front crawl and back crawl
  • Learn elementary backstroke
  • Learn safe deep water entry
  • Learn to tread water
  • Use swim training equipment
  • Etiquette in swimming


Level 3 – Stroke Improvement
Designed for participants who are able to swim at least half the length of the lap pool by using one recognizable stroke and able to flutter kick for 25 yards. This level will focus on building proficiency in front and back crawl while introducing more advanced strokes and skills.

Prerequisites:

  • Push off the wall and glide in a streamline position on your front and back
  • Swim 15 yards of front crawl
  • Swim 15 yards of back crawl
  • Swim 15 yards of elementary backstroke
  • Perform a feet first entry into deep water and tread water for 30 seconds

Class Components:

  • Practice and improve front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke
  • Introduction to butterfly
  • Learn head first entry for diving
  • Improve open turns for all strokes

Level 4 – Stroke Enhancement and Refinement
Designed to teach participants the skills to be able to swim distances greater than 25 yards comfortably using more than one recognizable swimming stroke.

Prerequisites:

  • Swim 50 yards of front crawl with an open turn
  • Swim 50 yards of back crawl with an open turn
  • Swim 25 yards of elementary backstroke
  • Swim 25 yards of side stroke
  • Swim at least 15 yards of breaststroke
  • Tread water for 2 minutes
  • Perform a head first entry into deep water

Class Components:

  • Improve endurance for all strokes
  • Practice Interval training techniques
  • Diving into deep water
  • Basic water rescue skills

 


Aquatic Program for the Intermediate Swimmers:
Total Technique Swim Training (TTST)
Already know how to swim? This program provides technique and drill work for the established swimmer that is looking to fine tune their swim strokes. Participants will learn lap swim etiquette, how to read a pace clock and structured workouts while performing training techniques that will help build swim endurance and efficiency.

Prerequisites:

  • Swim 50 yards of front crawl continuously with rhythmic breathing and an open turn
  • Swim 50 yards of back crawl continuously with an open turn
  • Swim 50 yards of breaststroke continuously with an open turn
  • Tread water for 2 minutes

Class Components:

  • Improve stroke technique through drills
  • Increase swimming endurance
  • Become competent in flip turns
  • Understanding how to read and write a swim workout

Aquatic Program for the Advanced Swimmers:

SwimFIT
Tired of doing the same workout in the pool? Need a challenging swim workout?
This program is designed for those interested in swimming longer distances in a group setting through instructor led workouts that are challenging and focused on fitness. Workouts will include some drill and technique work with emphasis on endurance and strength building exercises.

Session cost:

Student: $26
Faculty/Staff: $28

Public: $31

Prerequisites:

  • Swim 100 yards of freestyle continuously with rhythmic breathing and an open turn
  • Swim 100 yards of back crawl continuously with an open turn
  • Swim 100 yards of breaststroke continuously with an open turn

Class Components:

  • Gain strength as a swimmer
  • Participate in a challenging group workout led by an instructor
  • A variety of workout types ranging from distance to sprints with multiple strokes

To register stop in at either of our Member Services Locations and choose the specific session(s) for a weekly series. This will allow you to attend the sessions each week for the duration of the series.

Private/Semi-Private Swimming Lessons

Private swimming lessons for adults are available, and each lesson is 45 minutes. Start with one or two lessons, or purchase multiple lessons at a time. Call 812.855.1321 for multiple lesson discount rates and for more information.
