Group Swimming Lessons

All Ages and Skill Levels Welcome!
Sessions consist of four to six participants per instructor and cost:
Student: $43
Faculty/Staff: $49

Public: $52
Note: If less than four participants, session will be cancelled and full refund issued. No other refunds issued unless you have a doctor's note.

Register at the SRSC or HPER Member Services suite during open facility hours.

Parking for weeknight lessons at the SRSC is free from 5-7 p.m. for swimming lesson participants.

Adult 1 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills:
Designed for participants who have very little or no swimming experience and may be fearful or uncomfortable in the water of any depth. Learn to gain confidence, self-reliance, and feel comfortable in the water.

Class Components:

  • Learn safe water entry and exit
  • Learn to submerge, exhale, and open eyes underwater
  • Learn basic breath control
  • Learn about buoyancy in water
  • Learn to float on front and back
  • Learn to glide on front and back with streamlined body position
  • Learn to change directions in the water
  • Learn to roll from front to back and back to front
  • Learn to recover from horizontal to vertical position
  • Learn to flutter kick
  • Introduction to front and back crawl
  • Learn combined arm/leg action for front and back crawl
  • Introduction to elementary backstroke (arms only)
  • Learn basic personal safety skills
  • Use swim training equipment


Adult 2 - Stroke Development:
Designed for participants who are comfortable in shallow water and can float without assistance, but have very little experience performing swimming strokes. Should be able to swim at least 15 yards of one recognizable stroke and flutter kick for 25 yards.

Class Components:

  • Learn rotary breathing
  • Practice and improve front crawl and back crawl
  • Learn elementary backstroke
  • Introduction to breaststroke
  • Introduction to open turns
  • Learn safe deep water entry
  • Learn to tread water
  • Use swim training equipment
  • Demonstrate etiquette in swimming


Adult 3 - Stroke Improvement and Refinement:
Designed to provide participants the ability to swim distances greater than 25 yards comfortably using more than one recognizable swimming stroke. Should be able to swim 25 yards of front and back crawl continuously, 15 yards of breaststroke, 15 yards of elementary backstroke, and tread water for 1 minute.

Class Components:

  • Practice and improve front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke
  • Introduction to butterfly
  • Learn head first entry for diving
  • Improve open turns for all strokes
  • Learn multiple treading water techniques
  • Use swim training equipment
  • Demonstrate etiquette in swimming

Swimming for Fitness
Already know how to swim? Try this new six week course designed to improve your endurance and teach you training techniques for lap swimming with structured workouts included. This course is not designed to provide introductory instruction for any of the strokes. It will focus on your fitness swimming goals.

Requirements:

  • Swim 100 yards of front crawl continuously with an open turn
  • Swim 100 yards of back crawl continuously with an open turn
  • Swim 50 yards of breaststroke with an open turn
  • Tread water for 2 minutes

Sessions consist of four to eight participants and cost:
Student: $60
Faculty/Staff: $69

Public: $74

Private/Semi-Private Swimming Lessons

PRIVATE LESSONS Private swimming lessons for adults are available. Each lesson is 45 minutes. Start with one or two lessons, or purchase multiple lessons at a time. Lessons can be arranged any time the SRSC Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center or Royer Pool is open. Call 812.855.1321 for multiple lesson discount rates and for more information.

Cost per private lesson (45 minute lesson):

Faculty/Staff: $24

SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS
Can't fit group sessions in your schedule? Learn to swim with friends! We offer special discounts on semi-private swimming lessons. Call 812.855.1321 for multiple lesson discount rates and for more information.
