Wildermuth Intramural Center Renovation Update—October 24, 2011

Recreational Sports participants,

We just received communication from the university (referenced below) informing us that the Wildermuth Intramural Center Fieldhouse will not be reopening until summer 2012. The offices, activity spaces and locker rooms that are currently open should remain open during the renovation. We will continue to experience odors, dust and noise while this work is being completed. The university has systems in place to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Occasional rerouting of access points, outages or temporary closures may be experienced during phases of the project.

We will update you as the work progresses.

----------------------------------------

Dean Torabi and Kathy Bayless,

Since the Wildermuth Intramural Center fire on July 5, a team has been working together to determine the best course of action to restore the space after such extensive damage. Time has been spent evaluating the extent of damage, repair options and cost implications. A portion of the restoration plan is underway, including the repair of the fire damaged roof and cleaning of the roof decking, steel structure and brick. A significant portion of the work remains, including:

  • Painting of the roof decking, steel structure, brick in fills, storage rooms, service spaces and staircases
  • Replacement of the main and emergency lighting
  • Removal and replacement of 5 of the 10 basketball courts
  • Sanding and refinishing of the other 5 courts
  • Potential removal and replacement of the track
  • Potential installation of fire alarms and smoke detectors
  • Repair and/or replacement of windows

After reviewing timelines for bids, delivery dates, installation schedules and sequencing of work, it has become clear that this project will not be completed until mid to late summer of 2012. I wanted to let you know of this timeline as soon as possible so that you can make the necessary adjustments to your academic classes and recreational sports programs. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Thank you.

Wildermuth Intramural Center Renovation Update—September 21, 2011

Renovation and restoration is actively underway to repair damage caused by the roof fire on July 5. Check back for more updates and images.

Wildermuth Intramural Center Fire Update—August 25, 2011

Campus Recreational Sport Member Participant,

On Tuesday, July 5, the Wildermuth Intramural Center was severely damaged due to a roof fire. This
was a three-alarm fire that took more than 50 firefighters, 15 fire/emergency vehicles, and close to
three hours to extinguish, resulting in thousands of gallons of water pouring onto the wood floor
and track below and smoke permeating the locker rooms, strength and conditioning rooms, Pool
194, gym 293 and adjacent spaces and office areas.
Work is underway to repair and/or replace the damaged section of the roof, courts/track, lights,
windows etc. Extensive cleaning and painting will also be required. Therefore, the Fieldhouse
section of the Wildermuth Intramural Center will remain closed until Sunday, January 8, 2012.

The following spaces will be open for use:

  • Strength and Conditioning Rooms
  • Gym 293 and 163 HPER 171
  • Pool 194 and Royer Pool
  • Martial Arts Studio 095
  • Racquetball Courts
  • Locker Rooms
  • Member Services Suite
  • Equipment Room
  • Dick Enberg Studio

We are sorry for the inconvenience this may create for you, but we will work hard to give you many
opportunities to pursue your healthy, active lifestyle.

Wildermuth Intramural Center Fire Update—August 3, 2011

RS Participants,

In consultation with IU Administrators, the Dean, several academic colleagues and our Management Team, we have decided to reopen the spaces on the west side of the Wildermuth Intramural Center on August 25th. The Fieldhouse, where the 10 basketball courts and track are located, will not reopen on this date as IU administrators are still developing the plan to address the significant damages in the Fieldhouse.

The spaces that will reopen 8/25 include:

  • Gym 293
  • Strength and Conditioning Rooms
  • Martial Arts Room
  • Locker Rooms
  • Equipment Room
  • Enberg Studio
  • Pool 194
  • Racquetball Courts

We appreciate your continued patience as we try to resolve any obvious issues in these spaces before 8/25. Our Facility Support Team will work with Building Services to clean these spaces, but a thorough cleaning and/or painting to remove all the smoke smell is not possible by the time we reopen. These issues and others will have to be addressed at another time as our primary goal is to get activity spaces open for fall.

I will update you as soon as key details are determined.

Wildermuth Intramural Center Fire Update—July 27, 2011

Campus Recreational Sports Participants,

As you may have seen, On July 22nd the Herald Times published a story about the roof fire that occurred at the Wildermuth Intramural Center (WIC) earlier this month. It included a statement that repairs associated with the fire will not be completed in time to start the fall semester and that the facility may not reopen until mid-fall. We want to share some context about the numerous unresolved variables that make it unrealistic to set an official re-opening date at this time. The fire caused extensive damage that is still being evaluated so that an action plan can be developed.

This was a three-alarm fire that took more than 50 firefighters, 15 fire/emergency vehicles, and close to three hours to extinguish, resulting in thousands of gallons of water pouring onto the wood floor and track below and smoke permeating the locker rooms, strength and conditioning rooms, Pool 194, gym 293 and adjacent spaces and office areas. This is what we know at this time:

Sections of the fire-damaged roof and surrounding areas will have to be removed and replaced including some sections of the decking. IU is awaiting a plan from the roofing company that will include an estimated timetable for completion.

IU hired a company to try to remove the water from the wood floor with the goal to restore it to full use. After this is completed, IU will work with floor experts to determine if the floor can be restored for use, or if sections or the entire floor will need to be replaced.

IU has asked experts to evaluate the status of electrical, heating and ventilation systems, as well as lights, to see if they can be restored or if replacement will be required.

Windows were broken during the fire and will need to be replaced.

Options are being evaluated to address smoke and soot damage throughout WIC. There are restrictions on how various surfaces can be cleaned due to Environmental Health and Safety regulations. Therefore, careful consideration is being given to cleaning and painting options.

A variety of other items will be evaluated for cleaning or replacement including: floor tarps, drop nets, court curtains, track surface, lockers, carpets, signage, sport equipment, etc.

The ability to thoroughly assess damages and options has been limited due to challenges accessing the space while water extraction is taking place. This is an extremely challenging process to work through due to the number of IU departments and external parties at the table: University Architects Office, Risk Management, Environmental Health and Safety, the roofing company, insurance companies, Emergency Management, the Vice President's Office, Physical Plant, and others.

We are making every effort to work with the various parties to identify needs, concerns and potential options. Until decisions are finalized about the roof replacement and the floor condition we cannot move forward. Once these crucial decisions are made a general timeline will start to emerge. We will be working with our Recreational Sports Management Team to identify various plans based on potential reopening dates; whether it is all or part of the fall semester. We will also be assessing the option of opening parts of WIC, if possible. RS Staff members are already putting information together to assist us with decision making, including, but not limited to:

  • Membership Implications (over 2000 members to date)
  • Options for Intramural/Club Sports (relocation, rescheduling and/or cancellation)
  • Impact on hourly staff (1000 annually)
  • Implications for Informal Sport Participants
  • Impact on SRSC (overcrowding, additional staffing needs etc.)
  • Issues surrounding External Rental Groups who have fall reservations
  • Loss of Income
  • Implications for academic colleagues if WIC is closed for all or part of the fall semester. Thousands of credit hours are scheduled for WIC.

This is a difficult time for everyone who regularly participates at WIC, works there or visits on occasion. Many of us were excited about the improvements that were underway this summer and looking forward to reopening this August with a new roof, a thoroughly cleaned and painted Fieldhouse and many other upgrades. Sadly, this will not be the case on the timetable that was intended. We are still committed to seeing these improvements take place and will work diligently with the university to ensure that this special facility is restored.

While we have always been committed to participant satisfaction, we hope you will understand that we will not be able to serve you in the fashion you deserve for all or part of the fall semester. We will do everything we can to help you in your commitment to leading an active, healthy lifestyle, in spite of these constraints.

We will continue to update you as we learn more about the restoration plan and timeline for reopening.

Recreational Sports Member,

As we prepare for the Wildermuth Intramural Center roof project, we want to be sure you know how to access facilities as well as RS programs and services during the planned closure period of May 9 – August 15.

Your RS Membership and Access to Facility Spaces
Your Campus Recreational Sports membership card or student ID will continue to provide access to both HPER and SRSC. While academic classes and most recreational sports activities will move to the SRSC, participants will have limited access to activity spaces for tennis, basketball, swimming, group exercise, yoga, and Pilates during the closure period:

  • Royer Pool
  • Gymnasium 163
  • Gymnasium 171 for scheduled fitness/wellness programming
  • Woodlawn tennis courts
  • Lower level men's and women's locker rooms
  • Relocated equipment and towel check-out in HPER 008G adjacent to women's locker room
  • Relocated member services suite to the HPER foyer mail room

As a reminder these are the spaces that will be closed May 9-August 15:

  • Fieldhouse with the 10 basketball courts and track
  • Strength and conditioning rooms
  • Racquetball courts including the Dance Space on Court 6
  • Martial arts studio (095)
  • Upstairs gymnasium(293), including the Fort on Court 1
  • Pool 194
  • Dick Enberg distance education classroom
  • Main level locker/shower rooms for men and women(including faculty/staff)
  • Equipment room

New Locations for Member Services Suite & Equipment Checkout
Throughout the project, you'll be able to purchase memberships, register for programs and check out locks and tennis equipment at our temporarily relocated Member Services Suite in the HPER foyer. We'll have an additional full-service equipment checkout location downstairs in HPER 008G adjacent to the women's locker room where members will be able to check out towels, locks, swim goggles, basketballs and tennis equipment.

Access to HPER/Wildermuth Spaces
The doors to the Wildermuth Intramural Center (south building) will NOT be accessible during the closure, except the west doors leading to the academic and Campus Recreational Sports offices. If these doors are temporarily closed due to construction, signage will redirect you to another access door. All doors to HPER (north building) should remain accessible throughout the project.
While the project completion date will be influenced by weather conditions and any unforeseen circumstances, we will do everything we can to reopen as scheduled on August 15th. We look forward to contacting you again in July with information about re-opening plans for August.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. For detailed summer program and facility hours, or pick up a brochure at RS Member Services.
