Graduate Assistantship Position Descriptions

Aquatics

Number of Assistantships Offered: 1 (0 available for Fall 2014)

Program Overview

The aquatics program strives to deliver outstanding recreational opportunities for Indiana University students, faculty, staff and public members. We seek to deliver innovative aquatic programming including: recreational swimming and diving, non-credit instructional programs, American Red Cross training, family swim times, intramural sports, club sports, water volleyball and more. Recreational Sports serves as the aquatics facility manager for three indoor pools and coordinates use of the pools between Recreational Sports, IU Athletics and Academic classes. The Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center at the Student Recreational Sports Center has a 25 yard by 50 meter competition pool and a separate diving well, including diving towers. Recreational Sports has hosted numerous Big Ten swimming and diving championships, NCAA water polo and diving competitions, and USA Swimming national and regional swim meets at this venue.

Responsibilities

The aquatics Graduate Assistant is responsible for assisting the Assistant Director of Aquatics in recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, leading and evaluating a diverse aquatic staff of approximately 85 student employees. Additionally, the position is involved in development and promotion of aquatic programs targeted to students, faculty and staff. Further experience opportunities include participation on division-wide committees, budget construction, coordination of special events and direct interaction with recreational sports participants.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in recreation or related field. Prior supervisory and special event management experience and experience working in a collegiate recreational sports program is highly preferred. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor certificates preferred. American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification required along with formal admittance into an approved graduate program.

Group Exercise

Number of Assistantships Offered: 2 (1 available for Fall 2014)

Program Overview

The Campus Recreational Sports Fitness/Wellness Program offers multiple strength and cardio facilities with over 400 pieces of exercise equipment in two campus locations. We offer a comprehensive personal training program. And, we offer over 80 weekly group exercise sessions. The Fitness/Wellness unit employs over 120 part-time staff members (mostly undergraduate students). Participation in Fitness/Wellness programs results in over 1 million participant interactions annually.

Responsibilites

Fitness/Wellness graduate assistant positions are applied working positions with responsibility for assisting wit hourly staff leadership, facility management, program development, and all other aspects of delivering a comprehensive collegiate fitness/wellness program. Significant experience in managing fitness/wellness programs, personal training, and/or group exercise leadership is strongly preferred.


The group exercise Graduate Assistant will work directly with the professional staff, other graduate assistants, and over 40 group exercise leaders (instructors) to deliver group exercise sessions including: various dance formats, strength and core sessions, multiple cardio formats, kickboxing, step, yoga, Pilates, group cycling and various water formats. The Graduate Assistant will gain experience in hiring, training, schedulign, supervising and evaluating group exercise staff members. The Graduate Assistant will also be responsible for assisting with payroll processing, special event coordination, and other duties related to the successful operation of a progressive and comprehensive recreational sports program.

Qualifications

ACE or ACSM/HFS certifications are preferred. A Bachelors degree in exercise science or related field is required along with formal admittance to an approved graduate program.

Strength/Cardio Facility & Program Management

Program Overview

Significant experience in managing fitness/wellness programs, personal training and/or group exercise leadership is strongly preferred.


The Strength/Cardio Facility & Program Graduate Assistant will work directly with the professional staff, other graduate assistants, and over 60 hourly-wage student employees to deliver facility supervision and programming in several locations. Facilities include large gyms and a variety of smaller studio spaces. These facilities are housed in the Student Recreational Sports Center and the Wildermuth Intramural Center. The Graduate Assistant will assist with hiring, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluating student employees. The Graduate Assistant will also be responsible for assisting with payroll processing, special event coordination, and othere duties related to the successful operation of a progressive and comprehensive recreational sports program. 

Qualifications

ACE or ACSM/HFS certifications are preferred. A Bachelors degree in exercise science or related field is required along with formal admittance into an approved draduate program.

Informal Sports & Student Personnel

Program Overview

With two convenient campus locations—the School of Public Health (SPH) building and the Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC)—Recreational Sports offers a wide variety of programs and services to all participants. Opened in 1995, the SRSC is a 137,000- square-foot facility that includes two multipurpose gyms, a five-court field house with a 1/8 mile elevated running/jogging/walking track, an Olympic-size pool, a diving well with competition towers, seven racquetball/handball courts, two squash courts, two conditioning/weight training rooms, a cardio studio, strength circuit, an auditorium, locker rooms, and a fitness consultation room. Our SPH building offers comparable activity space that includes two conditioning/weight training rooms, 11 racquetball/ squash courts, 10 basketball/volleyball courts, a running/jogging/ walking track, two multipurpose gyms, a pool and diving well, and shower/locker rooms.

Responsibilities

Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluating Informal Sports Supervisor and Team Leader staff of 100 part-time student employees. Assist with student personnel projects, payroll processing, special event coordination, program development and other duties related to the successful operation of a progressive and comprehensive recreational sports program for students, faculty and staff.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in recreation or related field is required along with formal admittance into an approved graduate program. Prior supervisory experience, excellent communication and relational skills and experience working in a collegiate recreational sports program is preferred.

Intramural Sports

Number of Assistantships Offered: 3 (1 available for fall 2014)

Program Overview

Recreational Sports’ Intramural Program is a large, progressive program that adapts to the needs and interests of the participants. The sports and activities that are offered not only include traditional intramural sports, but also more social and fun sports like dodgeball and wiffleball. Currently, Intramural Sports includes 14 team sports, six dual/individual sports and eight special events. Graduate assistants will have the opportunity to gain experience with team sports (e.g. basketball has 420 teams) and dual/individual sports (e.g. tennis has 200 participants). Graduate assistants gain personnel experience assisting with our 450 officials. 

Responsibilities

The Graduate Assistant will assist with hiring, payroll processes, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluating student employees. They will also be responsible for planning, promoting, scheduling, evaluating, and administering team sports and individual/dual sports.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in recreation or a related field is required along with formal admittance into an approved graduate program. Prior officiating experience, excellent communications and relational skills and experience working in a collegiate recreational sports program are preferred.
